Largest Shipping Container Community in Colorado Opens in Buena Vista

When Jerry Champlin and his wife Tania McEvoy set out to build a housing development in Buena Vista, they wanted to create an attractive, efficient small-living community that would be affordable for working people.

Although they weren’t able to keep rents as low as they’d hoped, the couple was able to manifest their vision for a space where people share amenities that encourage them to connect with each other. BV Basecamp, which consists of 16 units constructed from shipping containers, is attracting a lot of interest from folks who live and work in Buena Vista, and attention from affordable housing proponents throughout the state. The community — the largest of its kind in the state — opened June 5, and Champlin expects most, if not all, of the units will be leased by early July.
