Produce Can Take a Rocky Road to Market for Colorado’s Small Farms

    0
By Jonathan Huang on August 5, 2026 Business Insights

When it comes to selling local produce, most small to mid-size family-run commercial farms are unable to access larger grocery store chains. They sell at farmers markets, through Community Supportive Agriculture (CSA) programs and via food hubs or wholesalers to smaller local grocers and retailers.

While the reasons for this are multi-faceted, some of the most influential include a highly consolidated and centralized market favoring large growers that can achieve year-round production and large volumes, logistical and regulatory challenges that many small operations lack the financial and labor resources to implement and maintain, and government subsidies and policy that favors commodity crops such as soybeans and corn.
