Do Colorado Springs Right This Summer

As we head into summer, it’s a great time to remind the community how to be good stewards of the destination when enjoying our parks, trails and open spaces.

Thirty-three percent of our overnight visitors come to town to visit their friends and family. So, as residents, we can make a big, positive impact by telling our kids, communities and neighbors how to care for Colorado Springs.

Here are some quick tips to help us protect these assets so we can continue to enjoy them for years to come.

    1.

Be mindful with fire. After such a dry winter, fire risk is especially high this season. Make sure to check for any fire bans before camping. If fires are allowed, use existing fire rings and be sure to fully put fires out with water. Dispose of cigarettes properly, putting them out and packing them up.

    2.

Avoid peak times. When possible, plan hikes and excursions for less frequented times. Early mornings and evenings — particularly on the weekdays — tend to be less crowded and allow for easier access.

    3.

Respect wildlife. From bears and moose to bobcats, foxes, deer, rattlesnakes and bighorn sheep, the Pikes Peak Region has many animals that call it home. Avoid feeding animals and never get too close — for their safety, as well as your own.

    4.

Leave no trace. Always leave a place the same or better than you found it. That includes picking up trash, cleaning up after your dog and avoiding carving or painting trees and rocks.
