    Pueblo Positions Itself for Buc-ee’s

By Tiffany Lancaster on March 2, 2026 Daily News

Pueblo officials are continuing efforts to attract Texas-based chain Buc-ee’s after the company withdrew plans for a proposed travel center in Palmer Lake.

Monument Ridge West withdrew its annexation application Feb. 4 following more than a year of local opposition. A company consultant said Buc-ee’s still plans to build somewhere in the region.

Communities across Colorado have been making their case by emphasizing highway access, available utilities and a business-friendly environment. The potential economic impact is significant. Johnstown, the site of the state’s first Buc-ee’s, saw a $1 million increase in municipal tax revenue during the location’s first year. New locations typically bring more than 200 jobs with entry-level pay estimated at $18 to $21 per hour, according to Glassdoor.

Pueblo positioned itself early. In October 2025, the City Council approved a resolution supporting a local site and offering site readiness and expedited review. Public Works Director Andrew Hayes pointed to “significant uncertainty” surrounding the Palmer Lake proposal and said the city would move quickly while maintaining local protections.

Potential sites include areas along Interstate 25 between exits 102 and 104 and near Pueblo Boulevard. City officials also highlighted Pueblo’s location at the intersection of Interstate 25 and U.S. Highway 50 as a key advantage.

Councilmember Brett Boston summarized the city’s approach during earlier discussions: “When opportunity knocks, you’ve got to open the door.”

Douglas County and Lamar have also expressed interest. Johnstown remains Buc-ee’s only Colorado location as of March 1, 2026.
