Paul Yankey: Silence in Distress Is Not an Option

    0
By Paul Yankey on October 6, 2025 Business Insights

In times of distress, many leaders and organizations pull back. They wait for the moment to settle, for markets to calm or for the right words to become clear. The instinct feels safe. But silence is not neutral. It communicates absence, uncertainty or even indifference.

Marketing is not just about campaigns and promotions. At its core, it is about understanding and, in turn communicating. When customers, employees or communities are under strain, they notice who speaks and who does not. Presence in these moments builds trust. Silence erodes it.

I have seen this firsthand in enterprise environments and in community settings. During downturns at Dell, Cisco and Salesforce, the companies that stayed visible and engaged often strengthened their position, even, and sometimes especially, when they did not have all the answers. Competitors that went quiet left a vacuum, and others quickly filled it.

Communication in distress does not mean you must offer certainty or perfection. It means acknowledging reality, reaffirming values and making clear that you are present. Sometimes the most powerful message is simple: we see you, we are with you and we are not going anywhere.

Marketing in stable times is easy. Marketing in distress is defining. The leaders who are willing to speak with honesty and humility, even when clarity is incomplete, signal strength to their customers. They show that their brand or organization is resilient and responsive, not hidden or paralyzed.

Silence may feel like safety, but it creates doubt. A steady voice, even with limits, creates confidence. In distress, your words matter more than ever.

    Use them.
