What Sundance’s Move to Colorado Means for the Film Industry

    0
By Theresa Woods on October 2, 2025 Business Insights, Featured

The Sundance Film Festival is moving to Boulder in January 2027. It has been held in Park City, Utah since 1985 and is the premier international showcase for independent film. Gov. Jared Polis cited the film industry as a key economic driver and job creator, calling the relocated film festival a boon for jobs and small businesses around Boulder.

Colorado Welcomes Sundance with Tax Credits

The Tax Incentive for Film Festivals legislation, HB25-1005, was proposed in January 2025 and passed on March 27. It provides tax credits to large international film festivals, such as Sundance, if they begin relocation before January 2026 – Sundance organizers announced relocation to Boulder on March 27. Colorado is providing an estimated $34 million in tax incentives over the next decade to the organization. Despite these credits, the state projects $16 million in additional tax revenue over that time period. Sundance generated more than $21.1 million in state and local tax revenue for Utah in 2025.
