    Childcare in Crisis: Supply is Not Meeting Demand in El Paso County

    El Paso County has the second-highest childcare shortfall in the state with 14,391 spaces needed to meet current demand, according to the “2025 Kids Count in Colorado! Databook,” an annual report tracking child well-being using data from a wide range of public sources. The Colorado Children’s Campaign (CCC), a nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy organization for the development and implementation of data-driven public policies that improve child well-being, produces the report. Childcare is a significant issue for families who desire to work and employers that desire to hire.

    “We’ve done some local work around this, and we are estimating a bit higher: between 16,000 and 17,000,” says Kelly Hurtado, COO of Joint Initiatives for Youth + Families’ (JI).
