Halfway between Denver and Albuquerque lies a city easily overlooked, where residents tout the friendliness of the people, the sense of place and the natural beauty. Take U.S. Highway 160 west from Interstate 25, and you’re in Alamosa. Nestled in the San Luis Valley, which locals call “the Valley,” is the region’s largest city, with approximately 9,500 residents.

“The border keeps jumping in South Colorado,” says Jeff Myers, director of the San Luis Valley Museum. Nearby Blanca Peak was significant to both the Ute and Diné before Juan de Oñate claimed it for Spain in 1598. It was part of the new nation of Mexico in 1821 and the Republic of Texas in 1836, before the Mexican-American War made it American in 1848.
