    Dr. Bill Craighead: Dissecting Colorado’s Employment Slowdown

    When comparing labor markets among the states, Colorado is usually a star; so, the recent weakness of the state’s employment picture stands out. Over the past 30 years, our unemployment rate has been at or below the national rate (309 out of 360 months). However, since March 2024, Colorado’s unemployment has exceeded that of the United States overall.

    The unemployment rate is calculated based on a survey of households, but employment figures generated from surveys of business establishments have also been lackluster. In the 12 months through March 2025, the state added 4,600 jobs[1] — a mere 0.16% gain — while U.S. payrolls increased by 1.14% in the same period. The year prior, Colorado’s increase of 1.75% had outpaced the national gain of 1.53%.
